Our Watchkeepers

Coastwatch is not a rescue organisation
Our role is to Spot, Plot, Report and Update.

Accidents happen and technology can’t always spot a distress flare, children or adults in trouble, an overturned boat, a water sports enthusiast in difficulty or navigational hazards such as floating debris.

That is why our volunteer watchkeepers are an important lookout service. So even if you don’t know your latitude from your longitude but can spare a few hours we would love to hear from you. All we ask is that you are over 16 and fit enough to carry out the required duties.

If you decide to join us you will be offered the following training

Watchkeeping Basics
First Aid
Tide and Weather Information
Chartwork
Throwing a Safety Rope
Rescue Observation Skills and Report Writing
Knots & Hitches
Distress Signals
HM Coastguard Knowledge
